Awareness Walk on World Diabetes Day 2010


As many as 16 million Pakistanis are suffering from diabetes and the figure of such persons all over the world is about 200 million.

This was stated by speakers at a walk organised by the Diabetes Pakistan and Medicine Department of the Punjab Medical College (PMC) to create awareness among masses about the disease here on Saturday, 13.11.2010.

PMC Principal Prof Dr Riaz Husain, Prof Dr. Zahid Yasin Hashmi, Dr.Khuram Raja, Dr Aamir Shaukat and Dr Mohammad Irfan led the walk that started from the college and terminated at the OPD of Allied Hospital. The participants were carrying banners and placards inscribed with suggestions for avoiding diabetes.

Addressing the participants, speakers Prof Riaz Hussain Dub, Prof Dr Zahid Yasin Hashmi, Prof Dr Muhammad Asghar Butt, Dr Hanif Nagra, Dr Muhammad Tufail and Dr Muhammad Irfan said Pakistan was among top four countries having high ratio of diabetic patients. They said the situation was deteriorating with every passing day owing to the negligence of people towards their health.

They said people were suffering from the disease owing to fast food and obesity. The disease was also gripping children. Diabetes was also a major cause of kidney failure and high blood pressure.
