Workshop on Chemical Safety


Its a good news for people of Punjab generally & people of Faisalabad (Pakistan) specifically that finally idea of Provincial Poison Control Centre has been given final shape & within 2-3 months the unit will be working in Medical Unit 1 of Allied Hospital under supervision of Prof Irshad ul Haq. and Dr Khurram Sohail Raja, Assistant Professor Forensic Medicine will be working as Coordinator at the Provincial Poison Control Centre for Ministry of Health in collaboration with WHO.

Day 1, May 22nd 2004 (Inaugural Session)

More than 150 guests & participants attended the inaugural session from Faisalabad & around Pakistan. Prof A.G. Rehan, Principal Punjab Medical College was the Chief guest & Dr Khalif Bile Mohamud, Country Chief of WHO for Pakistan was the Guest of Honour. Agenda given earlier was followed & presentations by Dr Jamal Ara, Incharge National Poison Control Centre Karachi, Pakistan & National Coordinator WHO for Chemical Safety, Dr Khurram Raja, Dr Ahmad Bilal & Mr Latif Sheikh were the highlights of the day. The movies of local pesticide market & graphical representation of Poisoning cases in Faisalabad by Dr Khurram Raja & Contaminated Water Supply to the city by Dr Ahmad Bilal were greatly appreciated by all. Prof Irshad ul Haq stressed on need of a Poison Control Centre & gave his requirements. Prof Rehan appreciated the efforts of all involved & promised to supply everything required to establish the centre. Dr Khalif Bile Mohamud in his speech expressed his satisfaction on bringing the establishment of Poison Control Centre to Faisalabad where there is grave need of the centre & a vey motivated team is available. Inaugural Session was attended by various Head of Departments of Punjab Medical College, judges, media men, guests from various walks of life, medical students. Fecilitators included Associate Professor Medicine Holy Family Hospital Rawalpindi Dr Irum Shakir and Dr Aftab Turabi, Specialist Toxicologist from JPMC Karachi

Day 2, May 23rd 2004 (Working Session)

Beauty of the session was that despite of Sunday it continued from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. but facilitators by their skill & pofessional expertise gripped the participants & nobody moved from his place till conclusion. Facilitators included Dr Jamal Ara, Dr Irum Shakir, Dr Aziz ur Rab & Dr Aftab Turabi.

Dr Irum Shakir & Dr Aziz ur Rab through their gripping talks & witty jokes kept the participants tightly gripped in various activity sessions.

Day 3, May 24th 2004 (Concluding Session)

It started at 9:30 a.m. & continued till lunch time. Attendance of participants was 100% & included a presentation by Dr Aftab Turabi on Management of Poisoning Cases. Final Recommendations were given by Dr Jamal Ara which were later sent to WHO & Ministry of Health Pakistan. These recommendations were frammed in light of various activity sessions & final presentations. Prof Irshad ul Haq was nominated as Project Incharge of Poison Control Centre & Dr Khurram Raja was unanimously selected & nominated as Focal Person & Coordinator for the Project on behalf of Ministry of Health in collaboration with WHO. emed was declared as OFFICIAL website of Poison Control Centre Faisalabad.
